A Masterpiece of High Gothic Architecture
The Doberan Cathedral is called the "Pearl of North German Brick Gothic" and is considered the most important medieval building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The essentially preserved Cistercian furnishing programme is unique in the history of art. Over the centuries, the Doberan Cathedral was a popular grave of Mecklenburg dukes and many noblemen. It was therefore under special protection.
The cathedral was built on a sandy, earthy island during the late Ice Age at the confluence of three streams in an environment with a very high groundwater level.
On very difficult ground, a magnificent building was erected, which is considered a unique symbiosis of a cathedral building modelled on the French High Gothic - shaped by predecessor buildings of the North German Brick Gothic and influenced by the building rules of the Cistercians.
